Detroit police say the death of rocker Chris Cornell, the lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and later Audioslave, is being investigated as a possible suicide.
Police spokesman Michael Woody told The Associated Press on Thursday morning that he can’t provide details on what led investigators to make that determination, but noted there were “basic things observed at the scene.”
Woody says Cornell died at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel. He says Cornell’s wife called a family friend and asked him to check on Cornell. Woody says the friend forced open a hotel room door and found Cornell on the bathroom floor.
TMZ is reporting that when the family friend forced his way into Cornell’s room, he found him with a band around his neck. There was reportedly no blood at the scene and police suspect it’s suicide.
“When the units arrived they were met by a gentleman who indicated that Chris Cornell had been found in his room,” he said.
“When officers went to the room they found Chris Cornell laying in his bathroom, unresponsive and he had passed away. We are investigating it as a possible suicide but we need to wait on the medical examiner to determine the cause and manner of death.”
The 52-year-old Cornell was on tour and performed on Wednesday night in Detroit with Soundgarden.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office will make an official determination about the cause of death.
Aaron Hernandez’s fiancée and their daughter were pictured for the first time today since the convicted murderer’s suicide. Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez 27, carried a car seat for her four-year-old daughter Avielle and was accompanied by a friend as she left her mother Jodi’s house in Bristol, Connecticut.
The usually immaculately turned-out Jenkins-Hernandez appeared tired and drawn as she left the row house shortly before sunset.
Earlier in the day, DailyMail.com discovered Hernandez had been plotting his suicide for some time, giving away all of his possessions to other prisoners before he was found hanged in his cell alongside three handwritten notes. He had also soaped the floor of his cell so that he would not be able to stand if he changed his mind.
Jenkins-Hernandez started dating Hernandez in high school, and the pair continued their on-again-off-again relationship into college and beyond.
They kept the relationship going even after he left her behind to attend the University of Florida while she went to community college in their home town of Bristol, Connecticut.
She was by his side throughout his time in the NFL, even adopting his last name, and in October 2012 – during the baby shower for Avielle – he proposed marriage.
Then, in 2013, Hernandez was accused of the murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd – a crime for which he would be found guilty two years later.
Jenkins-Hernandez stood by her man throughout the trial, and appeared as a witness for the defense – which is believed to have led to the sisters becoming estranged.
She also appeared throughout his trial for the 2012 murders of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, for which he was found not guilty just days before he killed himself.
His death has officially been ruled a suicide.

Police confirmed there’s an investigation into Tysen’s death, but declined to comment directly on his mother’s allegations.

The teenager, whose name was not released, sent a text message to a friend of her former boyfriend a few hours before she killed herself Tuesday, NY Post reports.
“In the text message, she mentions violence and a rape that her companion inflicted on her and claims she is ending her days because of the harm that the young man had done to her.
The video I am doing right now is not made to create the buzz but rather to make people react, to open the minds, and that’s it”. During the disturbing video , the teenager’s viewers can be seen encouraging her to do so citing that they were waiting . One individual even stated “It would be fun”.
On Tuesday, the woman spent more than two hours overall on Periscope, divided in five live sessions. The last one lasted 29 minutes and seemed to have been recorded moments before she killed herself.
In her own messages, the woman spoke a lot about her life and her difficult relationship with her former boyfriend.
The video has been removed from Periscope, but YouTube users posted what they said were excerpts. The suicide scene itself is not visible on YouTube.
According to reports from Daily Star, convicted footballer Adam Johnson revealed to a friend that only regular visits from one year old daughter Ayla will ‘keep him going’ while he is in prison.
He even reportedly begged his ex-girlfriend Stacey Flaunders to bring Ayla to Armley Prison in Leeds, West Yorks, after being sentenced to six years for child sex offences.
The former Sunderland footballer who was earning about £50k per week was found guilty of grooming and sexual activity with a 15-year-old which led to his conviction but prison officials have now placed Johnson on suicide watch after claiming seeing his daughter is the ‘only way’ he’ll survive while in prison.
A guard will now check Johnson every 15 minutes while he is in prison and officials have ensured he has no access to any sharp or hamful object. A friend told the Daily Star: “Even before he went inside he had begged Stacey that he wants to see her. “He has now called her and said he needs a visit and to see his daughter because of the grimness of prison life. “He told her it’s the only way he’ll be able to survive the sentence and will give him hope during his appeal.” This comes as Johnson’s sister Faye revealed he will be appealing his conviction and sentence.
Writing on her Facebook campaign page, she said: “Appeal Against Conviction lodged! Appeal Against Sentence is imminent this week!” His ex-girlfriend Stacey Flounders previously posted a photo on Instagram with the message: “I feel like I’ve lost my best friend.” She wrote: “I’m not even mad anymore at what happened in the past, I’m sad that it feels like I have lost my best friend.”
